NEW CHILD AND FAMILY CENTRE FOR LATROBE
A Majority Rebecca White MP State Labor Government will build a new Child and Family Centre in Latrobe to service the Latrobe and Kentish municipalities.
$3.5 million will be allocated towards its construction and a recurrent $500,000, will be allocated towards staffing the centre.
In announcing the project, Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition and Shadow Minister for Education and Training, Tanya Plibersek said: “The Tasmanian Labor model of Child and Family Centres has proven to be effective in improving the education, the health and well-being, and care of Tasmania’s youngest children.”
“Tasmania currently has twelve of these centres. All of them commenced under State and Federal Labor Governments.
“Unlike Premier Will Hodgman who seems to be focussed on doing deals with big business and cutting services, Labor is committed to investing in the Tasmanian people.
“Malcolm Turnbull has failed to support these centre.
“Child and Family Centres are not a priority for the Liberals. Mr Turnbull’s top priority is his $65 billion tax break for big business.
Anita Dow, Labor for Braddon said: “Tasmanian Labor is committed to building six new centres with two being built on the North West Coast, one in Smithton and one at Latrobe.
“These centres improve the health and educational outcomes for children – birth to five years.
“They build upon the work of local early learning centres and schools with a seamless integration of services for families and young children.”
Gerard Gaffney Labor for Lyons said: “The new Latrobe centre will provide a much needed service for children and families in the Kentish municipality.”
“Children in smaller country towns tend to be ignored and not offered the range of services that exist in the larger centres.
“A centre in Latrobe will meet a local need that is currently not provided. Why should a child in Railton not receive the same level of support as a child in Hobart?
Wayne Roberts, Labor for Braddon said: “The Latrobe municipality continues to experience the largest population growth of any area on the North West and West Coasts.”
“The location of a Child and Family Centre in Latrobe will assist in meeting a growing demand for services for young local children and their families.
“The Latrobe Child Health Centre is now located at the Mersey Community Hospital meaning local families can’t always access the additional services they need.
“A Latrobe Child and Family Centre will fill that void.”
