LIBERALS SHOULD CONDEMN HANSON’S GST CLAWBACK COMMENTS
02 May 2017
Federal Member for Braddon Justine Keay said the State and Federal Liberals should condemn comments made by Senator Pauline Hanson about the distribution of the GST.
“Senator Hanson’s call on the Bolt Report to change the way GST revenue is distributed in Tasmania will have devastating effects on our economy,” Ms Keay said.
“Senator Hanson needs to pull her head in and stop making ill-informed comments that will disadvantage Tasmanians.
“I am unsure how she can contemplate standing candidates in future Tasmanian elections if she is prepared to sell us out to other states.”
Ms Keay said both the State and Federal Liberals should denounce these comments and ensure that the state won’t lose as a result of the Government’s review.
“If not it will continue a worrying pattern of the Liberals cosying up to Senator Hanson,” Ms Keay said.
“The Federal Government has provided no guarantee that Tasmania will not be adversely affected by the review.
“The Tasmanian Liberal Senators need to urgently seek a guarantee from Treasurer Scott Morrison that Tasmania will be protected from any reduction in GST.
“While I have been pleased to see comments from the Tasmanian Liberal Senators that they oppose any change to the principles of horizontal fiscal equalisation, I hope they have been in both the ears of the Treasurer and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to protect Tasmania’s interests.
“I also hope the State Liberals act on their promise to fight any changes to GST distribution.”
