Federal Member for Braddon Justine Keay said, “The Regional Growth Fund
was announced with much fanfare by former Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce in last year’s May Budget.
“It is meant to provide grants of up to $10 million or more for major transformational projects which support long term economic growth and create jobs in regions undergoing structural adjustment.
“Yet nine months since the budget not one cent from this fund has been allocated with the fund closed for any applications.
“The Government’s own website says “Please monitor this website for any future announcements regarding funding under the Regional Growth Fund.”
“In the Braddon electorate, the West Coast is certainly undergoing “structural adjustment” as is the Circular Head district with the closure of the Murray Goulburn Plant at Edith Creek.
“Both of these communities could do with additional support, yet the Tasmanian Liberals Senators appear to have done nothing to have this fund opened up for applications.
“Senator Eric Abetz and his cohorts should be picking up the phone to new Federal Regional Development Minister John McVeigh demanding the Regional Growth Fund is activated.
“It is simply not good enough for regional Tasmania to miss out because the Turnbull Government has kept this fund closed.
